Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming a buzzword in the creative world, and it’s no surprise that its sudden surge has sparked mixed emotions. I get it — there’s a real fear that the use of AI in creative industries could replace the special human touch that makes the outputs in those fields unique and original. But here’s the thing: even for those of us working in creative fields, AI doesn’t have to threaten creativity. In fact, when used thoughtfully, it can be an incredible ally.
Many people see AI as a “quick and easy” content generator tool. However, in my work, I’ve used it to automate routine processes, help me write code to develop new tools (and I am not a coder), and even spark some inspiration to overcome creative writing roadblocks. I’ve seen firsthand how using the right tools in the right way and for the right purposes can enhance, rather than replace, the artistry and originality that drive creative industries forward.
AI in the Creative Process
Regardless of your feelings about AI, there’s no denying that the tools and advancements that have been developed since ChatGPT was released in November 2022 are mind-blowing. By leveraging AI capabilities, we can create ideas and execute faster and more efficiently than ever.
But AI is not just about productivity and routine processes. Far from stifling creativity, these advancements can empower artists and creatives to explore new possibilities while optimizing their workflows. Here’s a closer look at how AI can be a valuable asset in the creative process.
Generative design & visualization.
One of AI’s most exciting roles in creativity is its ability to assist with idea generation and visual concept creation. Generative AI tools can produce multiple drafts or mockups in a fraction of the time it would take a human designer. These rapid prototypes allow you to explore different design concepts, iterate, and refine the best ideas without starting from scratch or wasting a ton of time and money.
Efficient workflow management.
Managing creative projects can feel overwhelming, with multiple tasks, tight deadlines, and various stakeholders competing for attention. But thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone.
In my full-time role, we had a team that upgraded a system, leading to the need to change the URL string for thousands of files associated with their project. The team estimated the manual work required to process all these changes would take three to four weeks. Instead, we used AI to help code a solution that could automate this change in a matter of minutes. Including the time we invested in developing the solution using AI, we were able to condense three to four weeks worth of manual data processing down to about four hours.
To improve your workflows, look for areas where you currently perform manual repetitive tasks, prioritization exercises, or progress tracking. These are all great opportunities to explore how AI tools can automate and streamline your workflows, allowing you to spend less time on follow-ups and admin work and more time focusing on your creative ideas.
Design assistance.
Do you ever feel like some design tasks — such as choosing the perfect color palette or finetuning visual elements — take up too much of your time? Software like Adobe Sensei could become your new best friend. These tools use machine learning to perform tasks like suggesting complementary colors, applying design templates, and handling those small but essential design details. The capabilities of these tools go way beyond traditional macros here. They learn your process, style, and design sense to become a true design assistant.
Collaborative creativity.
AI isn’t just a tool for individuals. Some of the best use cases involve collaborative work that can invigorate and inspire your entire team. They will also appreciate the benefits of a smoother, more productive creative process. AI-driven platforms can give real-time feedback on visuals, help match concepts to project goals using predictive analytics, and generate fresh ideas based on pre-defined criteria.
Last summer, my organization hosted an internal education conference — by employees, for employees — that included a designated “AI education” track. My colleagues and I presented on topics ranging from “How to Improve Your Prompting Skills” to “Using AI to Generate Presentations in Minutes.” Beyond the educational knowledge-sharing benefits, we also incorporated AI tools into the conference platform that captured insights, suggested postsession strategies, and streamlined the content review process for those who couldn’t attend live.
Our employees rated it as one of the most valuable conferences in the company’s history, and we’re still seeing gains in efficiency and more creative project approaches nearly a year later. By keeping the human touch at the heart of the conference and building the AI around it to support and enhance the experience, we were able to push the boundaries of originality and boost engagement in the overall conference experience.
AI for Streamlining Repetitive Tasks
If you’re like most creative professionals, you probably enjoy the artistic aspects of your work much more than the mundane — but completely necessary — administrative tasks. By offloading the more tedious responsibilities to AI, you can focus more energy on what really matters: bringing ideas to life.
Here are some ways that AI can lighten your load when it comes to the boring stuff.
Automate tedious work requirements.
Some tasks, such as resizing or reformatting images, are an unavoidable but tedious part of your creative projects. Thankfully, there are numerous AI tools that can automate this repetitive work in just a few clicks. By choosing platforms that have these time-saving features already integrated, you can minimize the effort put towards time-draining tasks. For example, Canva’s Magic Resize tool allows you to instantly adapt your designs to fit various social media platforms without starting from scratch or manually reformatting your images for different canvas sizes.
Quickly analyze data.
If you’ve ever worked on a project that fell flat with your audience, AI could be a game changer for your business. AI tools can analyze user data, identify trends, and even predict what will resonate best with your followers. When designing marketing materials, AI can provide you with optimal colors, layouts, or even posting schedules based on what is most likely to engage your target audience. This kind of insight helps you hit the mark more often and avoid wasting time on unsuccessful campaigns.
Partner in the content creation process.
Content creation can be one of the most controversial uses of AI, especially if you work in content-driven industries. But AI shouldn’t become the enemy. When used strategically, it can greatly improve your efficiency. While it shouldn’t replace the creative process, it can certainly be a helpful partner for brainstorming, automating planning and organizational tasks, suggesting improvements to your work, or even providing recommendations on visual elements to complement your content.
Addressing Ethical Concerns and Authenticity
If you’re considering integrating AI into your creative workflows, it’s natural to have concerns about maintaining artistic integrity and originality in an ethical, responsible way.
Here are some of the most common questions to consider as you begin working with AI tools:
How can I make sure AI doesn’t compromise the value and authenticity of my creative voice?
It’s clear that AI is an incredible tool for inspiration and assistance — but it’s not here to replace the thing that makes you uniquely you. Think of AI as a collaborator that helps simplify your process rather than a replacement for your vision. Tools that generate ideas, refine drafts, or spark inspiration are just stepping stones along the way. Ultimately, the finished product never comes to fruition without you. Every creative decision rests firmly in your hands, from the smallest tweaks to the final direction. Your creativity is what brings the projects to life, while AI exists simply to enhance rather than overshadow your authentic voice.
How do I make sure I own the creative works that I produce when using AI?
When using AI, you should take proactive steps to protect your work and keep your originality intact. Do your research and only use AI tools that allow for customization of your own work so your unique style shines through.
What should I know about copyright and copyright infringement as it relates to AI?
According to the U.S. Copyright Office, AI-generated works require a degree of human authorship to qualify for copyright protection. More specifically, it stated, “It is well established that copyright can protect only material that is the product of human creativity.” (2023)
When it comes to copyright infringement, it’s important to be aware of who owns (or at least has the ability to own) the copyright for any works produced using a specific tool. To that end, make sure to check the terms of use for any AI tools you’re utilizing. Some platforms may specify that they retain the rights to any AI-generated outputs, while others give full ownership to the user who generated the content. Taking the time to read and understand these terms will give you peace of mind and more control over your creations, as well as helping you avoid legal issues.
How do I use AI ethically and responsibly in my business?
The best way to use AI ethically is to lead with transparency. Being honest about AI’s role in your creative process not only establishes trust with your clients but also demonstrates your responsibility and professionalism as a business owner. For example, if you used an AI tool to mock up a layout or assist with ideation, you could mention this in your project notes or client communications. And giving credit, even to a non-human AI tool, is just as vital. If AI-generated elements deserve acknowledgment, don’t shy away from including them in your credits.
AI in the Future of Creative Work
Adopting AI might seem daunting, but being curious and open-minded is key to staying ahead of the curve as AI continues to evolve. When digital tools came on the scene for art and video editing, those who learned to embrace them benefitted from improved efficiency, while those who resisted were left behind. Similarly, AI is shaping up to be a game-changer for creative professionals — not as a replacement, but as a powerful partner.
As AI is incorporated into more products and platforms, it will increasingly be used for collaboration and streamlining workflows. Think of these tools as super-efficient assistants that handle all the time-consuming stuff, like generating ideas, summarizing data, or organizing schedules. Without these tools, you can still be your uniquely creative self. But with them, you’ll have more time to focus on what you do best: your artistry.
If you’re unsure how to take the first step, start small. Find simple, repetitive tasks that you can hand over to your “AI assistant” in the same way you would assign tasks to an intern on their first week on the job. Dive in, test the waters, and see how it fits your process. As you get more comfortable with which tools work best within your workflows, you can incorporate more advanced tools, opening up new creative possibilities.
Embracing AI for Creativity and Efficiency
AI is quickly becoming a trusted ally among creative industries, offering ways to boost efficiency and spark new ideas. However, it’s understandable if concerns about authenticity or ethics cause you to hesitate to embrace these relatively new tools. But AI doesn’t have to replace creativity — it can support it.
The key to adopting AI is to start small. Experiment with simple tools that align with your creative style and goals. This gradual approach will help you discover how AI can support your work without overwhelming your process.
